When first put into operation, tourism development at Hoang Lien National Park faced difficulties, not attracting many tourists due to incomplete and synchronous infrastructure and lack of investment resources. Over time, the available potential and the right tourism development strategy have helped ecotourism in Hoang Lien National Park thrive. In particular, the period 2013 – 2015 was a prosperous time for ecotourism development in Hoang Lien National Park.
However, when the Fansipan cable car came into operation, most visitors chose to conquer the roof of Indochina using the cable car system, and the number of visitors experiencing climbing services at Hoang Lien National Park decreased sharply. In particular, when the economy was affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic, the number of tourists coming to Sa Pa and visiting Hoang Lien National Park decreased. By early 2022, ecotourism at Hoang Lien National Park shows signs of prosperity again. From the beginning of 2023 until now, it has also attracted nearly 6,000 visitors.
Flora & Fauna
With the unique features of Hoang Lien’s climate, weather, and terrain, an extremely rich flora and fauna system has formed here. According to scientists’ assessments, Hoang Lien National Park is one of the most biologically diverse centers in Vietnam, especially forest flora. Hoang Lien National Park currently has 2,847 species of vascular plants, belonging to 1,064 genera of 229 families, in 6 plant phyla.
The fauna of Hoang Lien National Park has recorded 555 species of terrestrial vertebrates, of which 96 species of mammals; 346 bird species; 63 species of reptiles and 50 species of amphibians, especially a very rare species of spiny frog, have just been discovered.
Insects
Leaf-eating beetles have 89 species, 40 varieties and 9 subfamilies. There are 18 species of pliers belonging to 7 genera, of which 4 species are only found in Hoang Lien National Park. Among the 555 vertebrate species recorded in Hoang Lien, there are 60 rare and precious animal species recorded in the Vietnam Red Book (1992), 33 species in the IUCN/2004 Red List, 05 endemic bird species for Vietnam and 55 other bird species endemic to the high mountains of Hoang Lien Son.
