Sa Pa (also spelled Sapa) is a town in Lao Cai province, Vietnam. Sa Pa town is located in the west of Lao Cai province, geographically: The east borders Lao Cai city and Bao Thang district, The west borders Tam Duong district and Tan Uyen district in Lai Chau province, The south borders Van Ban district, The north borders Bat Xat district.

Located in the northwest of Vietnam, Sa Pa town has an average altitude of about 1,500 m - 1,800 m above sea level, 33 km from Lao Cai city and 317 km from Hanoi.

The average annual air temperature of Sa Pa is 15 °C. In summer, the town does not have to endure the harsh sunlight like the coastal plain, about 13 °C - 15 °C at night and 20 °C - 25 °C during the day. Winter is often covered with clouds and cold, the temperature sometimes drops below 0 °C and there is snow. The average annual rainfall here ranges from 1,800 to 2,200 mm, most concentrated in the period from May to August.

Sa Pa has Fansipan peak 3,147 m high on the Hoang Lien Son range. Hoang Lien Son mountain range has many precious wood species and birds and animals such as partridges, bears, monkeys, and chamois. In Hoang Lien Son national park, there are also 136 species of birds, 56 species of mammals and 553 species of insects. There are 37 species of animals recorded in the Vietnam Red Book.

It is a very good place to do a road trip 5 days from Hanoi for Bird Watching. These are some kinds of birds you can find at Fansipan Mt (see further birds): Black-faced Laughingthrush, White-browed Fulvetta, Stripe-throated Yuhina, White-browed Bush Robin, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Bar-throated Minla, Green-tailed Sunbird, Golden Parrotbil, White-collared Yuhina, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Manipur Fulvetta, Yellow-browed Tit, Yellow-cheeked Tit, Sapphire Flycatcher, Mrs.Gould’s and Black-throated Sunbird, Blue-winged Siva, Red-tailed Minla, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Whiskered Yuhina, White-browed Flycatcher, Large Niltava, Great Barbet, Chestnut-vented and Chestnut-bellied and White-tailed and Beautiful Nuthatch, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Little Forktail, White-caped Water Redstart, Plumbeous Water Redstart, Ashy-throated and Black-faced and Davision Warble.

1. Itinerary

Day 1 : Hanoi – Sapa (L/D)

7:30 Am, Pick you up at your Hotel in Hanoi, then drive to Sapa (6 hours), upon arrive check in hotel then birding and photography around the town and Ham Rong mountain for Black-headed Greenfinch, Black-throated Tit, Brown-breasted Bulbul, Rufous-winged Fulvetta. Have dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 2: Sapa - Fansipan Summit (B/L /D)

Have breakfast at hotel, then transfer to the top of Fansipan mountain (3143m) by cable car to near the top, walk up to the top for some souvenir picture on top of Indochina. Come back and follow the trail going down to 2.800m point (Camping place), birding and photo along the way down for Black-faced Laughingthrush, White-browed Fulvetta, Stripe-throated and White-collared Yuhina, Green-tailed Sunbird, Chestnut-headed Tesia, White-browed Bush Robin, Golden Parrotbill, Warblers, Rosefinches, Mountain Tailorbird, Hill Prinia, Scimitar Babblers, Wren Babblers, Shortwing.

Camping at 2.800m (camping materials, sleep bag, food, water supplied by local guide and porters)

Day 3:   Camping on Fansipan Mt - 2.200m (B/L/D)

Birding in early morning before breakfast, then follow the trail slowly going down for birding and photo till end of the day for Woodpecker, Minivets, Laughingthrushes, Wablers,Fulvettas. Picnic lunch on the way.

Accommodation: Camping at 2.200m – Camping place (Camping material, sleep bag, food, water supplied by local guide and porters)

Day 4: Fansipan Mt –Sapa (B/L/D)

After breakfast, birding and photo to Tram Ton – end of the trail (ranger station – 1920m) for many species; Nuthatches, Yuhinas, Minlas, Wablers (residents and migrations), Flycatchers, Fulvettas, Tits, Parrotbill, Sunbirds…Have dinner and overnight in Sapa

Day 5: Sapa - Hanoi’s Airport (B/L)

After early breakfast, going to Silver waterfall for Little Forktail, White-capped Water Redstart, Plumbeous Water Redsart, Small Niltava, Whiskered Yuhina. Then transfer to Hanoi, Have lunch en-route. Upon arrive Hanoi, drop off your hotel finish trip. End of tour.
